FAQ's
Skips are used for the removal of non-hazardous waste such as building debris, household items and green waste etc. If you need to dispose of hazardous waste, you need special permits and containers. It is illegal for you to mix hazardous waste with non-hazardous waste.
Along with plasterboards, mattresses are prohibited items as they cannot be recycled. Mattresses must be removed before collection or you will incur an additional charge of up to £50(+VAT) per mattress.
The following must also not be placed in the skips – asbestos, tyres, liquid containers/drums barrels/cartons, liquid, liquid paint, lead acid/vehicle batteries, gas cylinders, fridges/freezers, televisions, computer monitors/fluorescent tubes, any form of special, difficult or hazardous waste.
You may also request skips for scrap metal. These are available at a minimal cost and sometimes, even for free, depending on transportation costs and the volume of metal contained.
Skips are hired for 14 days unless you are placing the skip on the road and the permit is due to expire before this.
We will collect your skip 14 days after delivery unless prior arrangements are made. If you need your skip collected sooner or need to extend your hire period, please call the office. Charges may apply for longer hire periods.
For straightforward deliveries, your presence is not required. However, if a delivery attempt fails, a wasted journey charge may apply. If you won’t be present, ensure that you provide detailed delivery instructions, contact information, and remain reachable.
Similarly, for collections, you don’t need to be present as long as the skip is accessible and properly filled. Ensure there’s enough room for a lorry to maneuver, and that there are no obstructions like parked cars. The skip should not be overfilled and must not contain prohibited waste. If the pick-up fails due to improper filling, overloading, or lack of access, a wasted journey fee will be charged.
By law you MUST NOT over-fill your skip. To ensure the skip is safe to transport, you must ensure that it is not filled past the top of the sides. Over-filled skips will not be taken under any circumstances.
If you are unsure, YOU MUST ASK THE DRIVER before you start to fill your skip.
It is possible depending on the type of waste, weight of the skip and what your driveway is made from.
If you are concerned about the skip damaging your driveway, we can happily place the skip on the road instead, please inform us of this upon booking as a council permit cost will apply.
We recommend that plywood sheets are placed on the drive to help stop any scuffing on lifting the skip.
The responsibility remains with the hirer.
A skip permit is required before placing a skip on any public road or highway, including pavements. Please speak to the office to confirm the additional charge for a permit before booking.
This permit, obtained from the local council, regulates the placement of skips on roads due to space constraints and potential impacts on parking and traffic. Failure to obtain a skip permit is against the law and may result in fines or skip removal. Notably, no skip permit is needed for placing a skip on private property like your driveway, field, or private road.
A skip can be placed anywhere on your private property provided that the driver can access the location when the skip wagon returns to collect it. You may NOT move a skip when it has been placed, or you may make it inaccessible. Always give clear instructions to the skip wagon driver when he arrives at your premises.
If you want to place your skip on public land (i.e. the road or pathway) you will require a permit from your Local Authority. JMS Skip Hire will arrange this for you and any Local Authority charges will be added to your quote.
