Here are five of our top tips for making the most of your skip hire.
1. Choose the right size skip
It can be tempting to order a smaller skip to keep costs down, or to unintentionally underestimate how much waste you have. If you end up needing a second skip, it can become more expensive than initially anticipated. Have a good look at what you’re planning to get rid of before you book – bulky items like furniture can take up more room than you expect.

2. Check what you can put in your skip
Before you start filling, check that everything you’re getting rid of is allowed in your skip. Certain items need to be disposed of separately, such as asbestos, tyres, gas, fridges and freezers, sofas, paint and some electrical items. Plasterboard and mattresses also require specific arrangements.

3. Load your skip properly
How you fill your skip can make a huge difference to how much you can fit in it.
Start with heavier and bulkier items at the bottom, and where possible, break down larger items such as cupboards so they can take up less space, and use smaller items to fill the gaps as you go.
4. Don’t go above the fill line
Waste must not be loaded above the top of the skip. An overfilled skip can be unsafe to transport, and may not be able to be collected until the excess waste has been removed.

5. Protect your driveway
When you’re in the middle of a project, you don’t want to be waiting days for a skip and slowing everything down – especially if you’re paying for workers who can’t get on with their job.
